This project has been designed for an elderly couple as their home for retirement. Their love for travel and the outdoors inspired our design approach for this house. Minimalistic elements and an interior aesthetic with a satisfying beauty in its simplicity, that always feels fresh and blissful, was the essence for the design process of this home. The light cream-colored walls of the living room allow natural light to spread throughout the room, making it a vivid and bright space. A nature-themed customized wallpaper animates one of the walls of the living room and brings life and zing inside the house. The goal was to bring as much of the outdoors inside as possible and ensure as many natural elements were used to create an open, bright and clear concept.
Since this house is built for senior citizens, it had to be elderly friendly for day-to-day activities. Clean layouts with ample of space in between furniture allowed for free and easy movements from one space to another. Multiple seating options are provided in the living room, where the seating angle and height is easy to get up and sit down independently. Every room has a different yet unifying theme. A balanced combination of colors distinguishes every room with individual identities as per their function.
Light shades of ecru on the walls, with dark hues of wood features in the guest bedroom. Hints of grey are used in the upholstery and fabrics of the furniture. The headboard wall is covered with a white floral wallpaper that brings forth an elegant and fresh look to the space for guests using this room. Warmer colors are used in the master bedroom. We wanted the master bedroom to have a pleasant yet lively and energizing aura in the interior. We again bought the outdoors inside with a colorful and playful, nature-themed wallpaper that integrates perfectly with the room. Green trees with parakeets sitting on a fence create this dreamy scenery that gives a feeling of freedom and bliss. The wallpaper is intentionally placed in front of the bed, so the feeling of being outdoors can still be felt while one is resting.
Most of the furniture in the interior was selected and built with a minimalistic approach that would be easy to use and maintain over time. We have tried to keep the spaces as open as possible with unforced and simplistic elements that contribute to its spatial aesthetics and the homeowner’s sense of practicality. Cheerful, vibrant and nature themed walls bring a sense of youthfulness, freedom and a sense of sheer bliss to the elderly homeowners’ lives.
